Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to speak Mandarin Chinese?
No! FuSEP is entirely conducted in English. All lectures, lab communications, activities, and interactions happen in English. You’ll need strong English proficiency to engage with research, but no Chinese language requirement. Many participants use FuSEP to learn Chinese culture while collaborating in English.
Can I choose my research project and supervisor?
Yes! You propose up to two preferred supervisors/projects in your application. Many distinguished USTC professors have expressed strong interest in mentoring FuSEP students. If your preferred supervisor isn’t listed, you can search the USTC professors database, contact them directly, and obtain provisional acceptance to include in your application.
What if I’m rejected from my first choice supervisor?
USTC matches accepted students with available supervisors considering academic qualifications, research interests, and supervisor availability. If your first choice isn’t available, you’re matched with a supervisor working on similar research. The matching process aims to optimize research alignment while considering supervisor capacity.
Will I publish my research?
Potentially yes! About 70% of FuSEP participants contribute to research reports or publications. Your research contribution depends on project progress, data quality, and supervisor’s publication plans. Even if not formally published, you’ll produce a formal research report submitted to USTC as program completion requirement.
How competitive is FuSEP selection?
Highly competitive. FuSEP receives 30,000+ applications globally for approximately 100 slotsโ€”roughly 0.3% acceptance rate. Success requires excellent academics (3.0+ GPA equivalent), passionate research interests, strong statement of purpose, compelling recommendation letters, and authentic intellectual curiosity demonstrated throughout application.
What’s the living cost in Hefei beyond FuSEP coverage?
Hefei is affordable! FuSEP provides accommodation and meal allowance, but additional personal spending (entertainment, souvenirs, extra meals) typically costs $100-200/month depending on lifestyle. Many participants travel to other Chinese cities during program, which requires additional budget. Bring some funds for discretionary spending.
Can FuSEP help with future USTC admissions?
Yes! FuSEP participation significantly strengthens applications for future USTC degree programs. Outstanding international participants automatically receive priority consideration for USTC graduate scholarships. Many alumni successfully pursue Master’s or PhD at USTC with tuition coverage and living stipends.
What happens if I need visa support?
USTC provides full visa support. Upon acceptance, USTC issues official invitation letter required for Chinese visa applications. USTC assists with visa documentation and process guidance. Many nationalities don’t need visas for China; USTC clarifies requirements and supports accordingly. No visa costs are participant’s responsibility.
