About Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program 2026
The Sokendai KEK Summer Student Program 2026 is one of Japan’s most prestigious, fully funded international research fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students passionate about high-energy physics, accelerator science, materials science, and related fields. Hosted by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in collaboration with SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), this exceptional 8-week summer research experience offers hands-on engagement with world-leading particle physics research infrastructure.
Operating two state-of-the-art research campuses—Tsukuba and Tokai (J-PARC)—KEK conducts groundbreaking research into the fundamental nature of the universe using advanced particle accelerators and synchrotron light sources. Each summer, KEK selects approximately 20-21 students globally from thousands of applicants to conduct supervised research projects. All expenses are completely covered: international airfare, accommodation, meals, domestic travel, and daily living allowance of ¥1,500, eliminating all financial barriers to exceptional research opportunity.
Interns join research groups in elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, materials science, accelerator science, advanced detection systems, or theoretical physics. You’ll collaborate with postgraduate researchers, SOKENDAI students, and distinguished faculty members conducting cutting-edge experiments that advance human understanding of matter, energy, and the universe itself. This is genuine frontier research, not simulated exercises—your contributions may directly support published scientific work.

Step-by-Step Application Process
The KEK Summer Student Program application process has changed for 2026. Follow this new two-stage procedure carefully to ensure complete, successful submission:
Step 1: Arrange Recommendation Letter Contact
BEFORE starting registration, identify and contact your recommender—a professor or academic advisor who knows your scholarly abilities well. Inform them they’ll receive an email with a special code for submitting the recommendation letter. This prior arrangement prevents incomplete applications.
Step 2: Complete Online Registration
Register on the official KEK application website to obtain your unique ID number. This ID will be required for all subsequent application steps. Complete registration form with personal information, home institution, academic status, and contact details.
Step 3: Research Available Projects & Faculty
Explore KEK’s research groups and available projects. Visit www.kek.jp for information on research areas: Elementary Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Materials & Life Science, Accelerator Science, Advanced Detection Systems, and Theory. Identify projects and faculty matching your research interests.
Step 4: Prepare Academic Transcript
Obtain official academic transcript from your home university showing complete grade history, GPA, academic status, and degree progress. Include all years of study completed to date. English translation if originally in another language. Highlight any physics, mathematics, or STEM coursework.
Step 5: Write Research Interests Statement
Compose brief statement (100-200 words) explaining your research interests, why you’re interested in KEK summer program, and which research groups attract you. Be specific about physics topics and show genuine passion for research. Connect your academic background to research goals.
Step 6: Prepare Curriculum Vitae
Create professional CV (2-3 pages) including education, relevant coursework, academic achievements, research/lab experience, technical skills (programming, instrumentation), and extracurricular activities. Highlight physics and STEM-relevant qualifications prominently.
Step 7: Compile All Application Documents
Gather transcript, CV, and research statement into single PDF file. Include any optional supporting materials demonstrating research capability (published abstracts, awards, certificates). Name file clearly with your name. Include your assigned ID number in filename.
Step 8: Submit Application Documents
Log in to the KEK application portal using your ID number. Upload all application documents via the secure web form. Verify all required fields are completed and documents are clearly readable before final submission.
Step 9: Receive Application Confirmation Code
Upon submission, KEK sends you an applicant identification code via email. Save this code—you’ll need it for the next crucial step. Forward this code to your recommender immediately so they can submit the recommendation letter using their own web form.
Step 10: Recommender Submits Letter
Your recommender uses the code you provided to access the recommendation letter submission form. They submit the letter directly to KEK within the deadline. This two-stage process ensures strong recommendation letters and prevents incomplete applications.
Step 11: Await Selection Results
KEK conducts merit-based selection considering academics, research interests, supervisor fit, and diversity. Selection results announced by April 17, 2026. Accepted students notified with assigned supervisor, research project, and program logistics details.
