About Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2026

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) 2026 is one of Europe’s most prestigious, fully funded international networking forum for outstanding young researchers in mathematics and computer science. Hosted annually in the historic city of Heidelberg, Germany, this exceptional 6-day forum (September 13-18, 2026) creates unparalleled opportunity for brilliant young minds to interact directly with recipients of the world’s most prestigious scientific prizesโ€”including the Abel Prize, Fields Medal, ACM Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize.

The HLF 2026 will bring together approximately 200 exceptional young researchers from around the worldโ€”100 in mathematics and 100 in computer science. Participants span all career stages: undergraduates, Master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers (within 5 years of PhD completion). The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation completely covers all expenses: accommodation, meals, and social activities. Participants organize and fund their own travel to Heidelberg, but optional travel grants are available through home institutions.

This is not a typical academic conference. The HLF emphasizes personal interaction, informal dialogue, and cross-generational networking in the context of Heidelberg’s intellectual heritage and medieval atmosphere. Participants engage in laureate lectures, small group discussions, social dinners, networking events, and workshops designed to foster collaboration, inspiration, and lasting professional relationships. Many attendees credit the HLF with fundamentally shaping their research careers, providing mentorship from scientific pioneers, and opening doors to future collaborations.

Why Choose Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2026?

Interact with Scientific Giants

The HLF uniquely brings together recipients of the Abel Prize, Fields Medal, and ACM Turing Awardโ€”the highest honors in mathematics and computer science. Unlike large conferences where you observe from the audience, HLF format emphasizes personal interaction. Laureates eat dinners with participants, engage in informal conversations, and welcome genuine questions. This unmediated access to scientific pioneers is extraordinarily rare.

Global Elite Peer Network

You’ll meet 199 fellow young researchers selected from thousands of global applicants. These are the brightest minds in mathematics and computer science from diverse countries and institutions. Connections made at HLF often become lifelong collaborations, creating a powerful alumni network spanning continents and institutions.

Complete Financial Coverage

The HLF covers ALL on-site costs: accommodation, meals, activities, and ground transportation. Zero out-of-pocket expenses for food, lodging, or forum participation. Only your international travel is self-funded (though travel grants are available). This accessibility ensures financial circumstance never prevents participation.

Inspiration & Career Acceleration

Participants consistently report that HLF attendance profoundly influences their research direction, career trajectory, and professional confidence. Mentorship from leading scientists, exposure to cutting-edge ideas, and peer connections create lasting impact. Many credit HLF with introducing them to future supervisors, collaborators, or career mentors.

Historic Heidelberg Setting

Germany’s oldest university town (1386) provides intellectually inspiring atmosphere. Medieval architecture, castle overlooking the Neckar River, and centuries of academic tradition create unique environment for scientific dialogue. The setting itself inspires creativity, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary exchange.

Gateway to European Scientific Community

The HLF connects you to Europe’s research landscape, prestigious German institutions, and international scientific networks. Forum location in Germany provides cultural immersion and access to Europe’s scientific hub. Many participants pursue future studies or research positions in Europe.

Step-by-Step Application Process

The HLF application process is straightforward and entirely online. All steps occur through the official application portal. Follow these steps carefully to ensure complete, successful submission:

Step 1: Create Application Account

Visit the official HLF application portal at application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org. Create an account with valid email address and password. This account will be your workspace for the entire application process.

Step 2: Complete Personal Information

Fill in personal details: full name, date of birth, nationality, contact information, home institution name and location. Ensure all information is accurate and complete.

Step 3: Select Application Category

Choose your career stage: Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate/PhD, or Postdoctoral. Be honest and accurate about your academic status. This determines which selection committee reviews your application.

Step 4: Specify Discipline

Select whether your primary discipline is MATHEMATICS or COMPUTER SCIENCE. Only 100 positions available in each. There’s no advantage to choosing one over the otherโ€”choose based on your genuine primary discipline.

Step 5: Write Personal Statement

Compose compelling personal statement (typically 500-800 words) explaining your research interests, academic achievements, why you’re interested in HLF, and what you hope to gain from attendance. Be authentic, specific, and passionate about your mathematics or computer science research.

Step 6: Prepare Curriculum Vitae

Create detailed CV (2-3 pages) including education, academic achievements, relevant coursework, research experience, publications (if any), academic awards, and technical skills. Highlight all mathematics and computer science-related qualifications.

Step 7: Upload Academic Transcript

Obtain official or unofficial academic transcript from your home institution showing grades for all courses, GPA, academic status, and degree progress. Upload as PDF through the application portal. English translation if necessary.

Step 8: Arrange Recommendation Letter

Contact a professor, academic advisor, or supervisor who knows your scholarly abilities well. Provide them with the HLF recommendation letter submission link. IMPORTANT: They must submit the letter directly through the portalโ€”you cannot upload it yourself. This is a requirement, not optional.

Step 9: Include Optional Supporting Materials

For PhD and postdoctoral applicants: include thesis topic summary, publications (if any), and relevant awards or accomplishments. These enhance your application competitiveness but are optional for undergraduates and Master’s students.

Step 10: Review & Submit Application

Thoroughly review entire application for accuracy and completeness. Ensure personal statement is compelling, CV is professional, transcript uploaded, and recommendation letter is being submitted. Submit application before February 11, 2026, 11:59 PM Berlin Time (CET/UTC+1).

Step 11: Await Selection Results

The international expert committee (appointed by award-granting institutions) reviews all applications. Each application receives minimum three independent reviews. Top 100 in each discipline (mathematics and computer science) are invited. Results announced by end of April 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I’m from outside Europe?
Absolutely! The HLF is completely open to applicants from all countries worldwide. In fact, international diversity is valued. The forum deliberately brings together young researchers from diverse geographic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Approximately 50% of participants are typically from non-European countries.
Is the travel to Heidelberg covered?
International travel to Frankfurt airport is NOT automatically covered by HLFF. You organize and fund your own travel. However, HLFF provides free shuttle bus transfers between Frankfurt airport and Heidelberg on arrival/departure days. Additionally, you can apply for travel grants from your home institution or funding agencies to help cover airfare costs.
What if I’m just finishing my PhD?
Postdoctoral researchers (within 5 years of PhD completion) are completely eligible. Your PhD doesn’t need to be officially conferred yetโ€”if you’ll complete it before the September forum, you’re eligible as a postdoc. Just ensure accurate description of your current status in the application.
How competitive is the selection?
Highly competitive. The HLF receives thousands of applications globally for 200 positions (100 mathematics, 100 computer science). That’s roughly 0.5% acceptance rate. Success requires excellent academics, strong personal statement, compelling recommendation letter, and demonstrated genuine research passion in mathematics or computer science.
Can I participate in activities outside the scheduled program?
Yes! Heidelberg is a historic university city with museums, restaurants, cultural sites, and nightlife. The forum schedule allows free time for exploring, and many participants organize informal social gatherings. The atmosphere encourages both structured programming and organic networking.
Will I definitely meet the laureates?
Yes! That’s the entire premise of the HLF. The forum is deliberately designed for small group interactions, dinners, and informal conversations with laureates. Unlike large conferences where you watch from the audience, HLF format guarantees meaningful personal interaction with recipients of the Abel Prize, Fields Medal, and ACM Turing Award.
What visa do I need to attend?
Most participants need a German Schengen visa (training/visit visa). Citizens of visa-exempt countries don’t need visas. After acceptance, HLFF provides official invitation letter, hotel confirmation, and travel health insuranceโ€”all required for visa application. Make your visa appointment early, as processing can take weeks.
What happens after the forum ends?
You become part of the HLF alumni network (3,500+ scientists globally). Many lasting collaborations, research partnerships, and even marriages have originated at HLF! Alumni maintain connections through social media, reunions, and research collaborations. The forum often marks a pivotal moment in participants’ scientific careers and personal development.
